Fuel for thought – the new 208

When Peugeot’s hotly-anticipated new 208 goes on sale later this year, it will feature some of the most efficient engines yet seen in a supermini.

Peugeot has been acclaimed for the powerplants in its small cars since the legendary 205, and the spirit of this 1980s icon lives on in its latest descendant, with five petrol and five diesel engines set to be offered.

Class-leading emissions will see the 208 producing an average of 34g/km less CO2 than the outgoing 207, thanks to new technology and Peugeot’s innovative e-HDi micro-hybrid Stop & Start System, which will feature on almost every model.

The smallest diesel delivers over 83mpg, with CO2 emissions under 100g/km, and the three-cylinder petrol engines are almost as efficient. All this is incorporated into a car that’s smaller outside than the 207 (despite being bigger inside) and up to 173kg lighter.
