The new Volvo V40 is the safest car ever made, according to crash testers at Euro NCAP.
The compact family car was awarded five stars in the latest tests, and the Euro NCAP says it scored the highest mark of any model tested so far.
The V40′s pedestrian airbag received high praise and is a new piece of technology fitted across the range. If there is a collision with a pedestrian, the bonnet hinges release and an airbag in the engine compartment is inflated, covering the windscreen and A-pillars and lifting the panel by lOcm.
This creates extra space between the bonnet and the rest of the car, and means that a pedestrian’s impact is absorbed by the relatively soft metal of the bonnet, rather than the hard engine components, while the airbag protects their head from the windscreen and A-pillar.
The technology helped the V40 earn an 88 per cent score in the pedestrian protection category the highest ever awarded.
